Surf shops and repair
Simply put, there are no actual surf shops in Lobitos at the time of writing. You can easily buy bars of wax but this is about it. So if you come here, be sure to bring enough leashes, a wax comb, wetsuit, rash guard, fins etc. The nearest surf shop in located in Mancora and is a day trip to get to. This page is also available in Spanish and Portuguese
Surf board repair on the other hand is possible in Lobitos with either Darwin (located in Villa Militar) or Holgers (located in Nuevo Lobitos). Just ask the person who runs your hostel on how to get hold of them: this is if you are unlucky enough to need repair services.
Restaurants
There are plenty of restaurants now operating in Lobitos and most accommodation units offer in house cooking for their guests. You will mainly find places that serve typically Peruvian dishes, but some other places have now diversified into other types of gastronomy. The following is where you are likely to eat
- If you want to eat with the locals of Lobitos and therefore eat at the cheapest places in town go to Barrio Primavera and on the road to the Town hall in New Lobitos. There are, at the last count, 8 local restaurants serving typical meals. These are usually ‘menus’ which consist of a soup, a main dish and a freshly made drink for cheap.
- In Villa Militar, next to the Lobitos bus stop, you will find Cora’s and Tranqui’s restaurants. Both of which are favourite haunts of inbound surfers looking for lunch or dinner.
- To get Pizza in an awesome homemade oven, find Nacho’s place just behind the General’s house and is located on the hill as you come into Villa Militar. Just next to Nacho’s there is a place to get great homemade cakes and pastries.
- In New Lobitos, just on the sea front, there are three restaurants that serve a variety of great dishes. Here you can eat and look at the Punta break with surfers on it. These are Carlita’s, Albergue and hotel Lobitos restaurants.
Please note there are people who will walk round during the day selling ice creams (Mini the ice cream man rides just under 40km a day to bring you great ice cream to your door), homemade cakes and snacks: please support them in their efforts by purchasing from them too.
Health and Safety
There are no hospitals or Clinics to speak of in Lobitos, there are mini pharmacies (Barrio Primavera) and a bigger pharmacy in Nuevo Lobitos to purchase back items. If you do have an accident, you will be taken to the nearest hospital or private clinic in Talara: people here will quickly mobilize themselves to assist you when hurt.
Shopping
Hmm: nothing extraordinary which not surprising considering the size of this village. You can buy enough basic food stuffs such as dried goods, fruit and vegetables, chicken and fish here, chocolate, munchies snacks, oh yes and beer, soft drinks and bottle water. Fish can be bought directly off the incoming fishermen on the pier early in the morning. In terms of buying any tourist goodies: forget it! If you want to do more serious shopping, you will have to venture in Talara town, but go early in the morning before it gets too hot.
Lobitos Activities
Of course there is surfing to be done here, but there is more here to do than just that and in this section we tell you what. On smaller days, evenings or just days you want to take a lay day (especially if you bring your non-surfing girlfriend here) there is a wide variety of cool stuff to do:
- Read a book and chill during the mid-day sun, most hostels host a book exchange service.
- Take a fishing trip or boat trip to the nearby offshore platforms with a local fisherman. This is a great opportunity to see sea lions, dolphins and eat the freshest ceviche in your life! Trips can be organized through WAVES for development NGO: ask your local host to point you in the right direction for their office.
- For those without a board and/or wish to take surf lessons, WAVES for development NGO provide both services at a very reasonable price: ask your local host to point you in the right direction for their office.
- The Muelles Surf Camp just next to the pier has a cool outdoor, Indian styled sauna tent and is used for traditional ceremonies.
- Pool table is available for usage (drinks served there to) in the Barrio Primavera section of Lobitos. Last time it was checked, cost 3 soles an hour.
- A football (or soccer for those who get confused) pitch that is smoothly concreted is a great place to play a match with locals in the evening when the flood lights are turned on and the ambient temperature is cooler.
- Take a moto-taxi to the nearby Capullanas Caves. This sedimentary formation is quite stunning and should not be given a miss when here. It is also a great place to hang out and have a beach fired bbq with your friends. This place has a lot of local folklore surrounding this cave.
- Go and skate the WAVES NGO half pipe in Nuevo Lobitos, or do some urban skating in Barrio Primavera
- Take your surf board, sun cream water and food, then walk either north or south of Lobitos in search of completely un-crowded waves.
There are also several things to do near Lobitos that would be great half day or full day trips. These include going to Negritos bowling alleys, which also happens to be the oldest in South America: The bowling club of Negritos. Go visit the geographical point of Punta Balcones that marks the western most tip of the entire South American continent. For a party that is closer than taking the bus to Mancora and to truly experience a local night out, go to Talara on Friday or Saturday. Here there are 3 main night clubs located in town and are interesting to experience. For those who want a more hardcore party atmosphere, then Mancora is the place for you and then Lobitos will welcome you back for your recovery.
